Meaning of Easter
Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, which happened three days after he died on the cross to atone for the sins of the world. It’s a time of true joy and hope. At St. Luke’s Lubbock, we believe every person matters deeply to God. Our goal is to help you connect with a joy that’s grounded in the true message of Easter—life (both eternal and fullness of life now), hope and forgiveness found in Jesus. Whether you’re searching for something to lift your spirits or want to experience the hope of Easter in community, we invite you to come, be inspired, and find lasting joy in the Easter season.
What is the meaning of Good Friday?
Good Friday is the day we remember the death of Jesus Christ on the cross. It’s observed on the Friday before Easter. Christians believe that Jesus died to forgive people’s sins and bring them closer to God. It’s a solemn day of reflection and prayer, marking the suffering and sacrifice Jesus made for all people.
What are some Easter Scriptures?
-
Matthew 28:5-6
“The angel said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.'” -
John 11:25-26
“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?'” -
Luke 24:6-7
“He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified, and on the third day be raised again.'” -
1 Corinthians 15:20-22
“But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.” -
Mark 16:6
“Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him.”
What is Palm Sunday?
Palm Sunday is the Sunday before Easter and marks the beginning of Holy Week. It remembers when Jesus entered the city of Jerusalem, and people waved palm branches and laid them on the ground as a way to honor him. This event is seen as a sign of Jesus being recognized as a king, but it also leads into the events of his crucifixion later in the week. It’s a day of celebration, often with people in church waving palm branches.
